Myanmar Signed Protocol Additional to the Agreement between Myanmar and the IAEA for the Application of Safeguards in connection with the treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

A protocol additional to the Agreement between the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the International Atomic Energy Agency for the application of Safeguards in connection with the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was signed on 17th September 2013 at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin and Director-General Mr. Yukiya Amano signed the protocol on behalf of the Government of Myanmar and IAEA respectively.

Currently, Myanmar is undertaking a process of preparing herself to implement the protocol. The process, among others, includes drafting a domestic law, forming a national authority for implementation of the protocol and establishing a State System of Accounting and Control. When this preparatory process is completed, Myanmar will inform the Agency by a written notification to trigger the entry into force of the Additional Protocol for Myanmar.

Myanmar is actively pursuing nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in international forums. At this Additional Protocol contributes towards these goals, Myanmar will continue to cooperate with IAEA and the international community for the implementation of this Additional Protocol.
